Winterfield is a gem of a golf course in the truest sense. Located just outside the seaside town of Dunbar, the course hugs the shore, with some of the best views on Scotland’s Golf Coast. Out to sea are the Bass Rock and the Isle of May, with the Lammermuir Hills as a backdrop.
It is a relatively short course in terms of distance, but don’t be lulled into a false sense of security! There are eight par 3’s, but only one is less than 170 yards, making it tough for even the very best. The 1st is a cracker, and is often spoken about as the best opening hole on the coast. From the tee, it’s a 220-yard carry over a ravine to reach the pin. Let’s just say it’s a unique way to start the round.
After the 1st, the front nine is slightly more friendly. Perched on the top of the cliffs, the traditional stone walls and views combine to create an attractive course layout. The back nine offers plenty of opportunity to score well. The simply stunning stretch of holes from 12 to 16 look out to the Bass Rock and neighbouring Belhaven Beach, and the Bridge to Nowhere.
Hole 14 in particular would not look out of place on one of Winterfield’s more esteemed neighbours. The par 3 over the corner of the beach can be an eight iron, or a rescue depending on the wind. Well-protected, and a green on two tiers, the tee shot is only the beginning.
